Olympic Champion Susanne Grainger retires from rowing


On November 1, 2021, Olympic gold medallist Susanne Grainger announced her retirement from rowing following a successful 17 years in high performance sport.  

Susanne Grainger started rowing in London, Ontario as a grade 8 student. She was a member of the University of Virginia’s varsity eight and made her international debut in 2011 at the World U23 Championships, winning gold in the women’s eight. Susanne followed that up with a gold in the women’s four at the 2012 World U23 Championships.

Making her senior national team debut in 2013, Susanne competed in six World Championships and two Olympics. She has five World Championship medals (three silver, two bronze) and 10 World Cup medals (two gold, four silver, four bronze), and concluded her rowing career with a gold in the women’s eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
