RCA celebrates 2021 Long Service Award recipients


RCA is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Long Service Awards. RCA’s Long Service Awards recognize individuals who have served as a rowing volunteer, in any capacity, for 15 years or longer. Thank you for all that you do for our sport!

60 Years

Alan Roaf
University of Victoria

Alan has been involved in rowing in Canada since the 1960s. He has coached athletes at all levels, from club to Olympic, and has been a prominent coach educator. He has sat on various RCA committees and served as an RCA Technical Director, Executive Director, and High Performance Director.  

50 Years

Hap Stelling
Rowing New Brunswick Aviron

Hap rowed at various clubs in Ontario in the 1970s, and has been a long-time RCA umpire.

Terry Kelly
Peterborough Rowing Club

Terry was the founding treasurer of Kington Rowing Club and spent 45 years as the treasurer of Peterborough Rowing Club, in addition to coaching and fulfilling various support roles.

Rick Crawley
Brentwood College School

Rick is an experienced coach, working with athletes at all levels, from junior novices, to Olympic rowers, and spent 35 years as the Head Coach of the UVic women’s team. 

40 Years

Chris Flood
Kennebecasis Rowing Club

Chris has been the long-time President of the Kennebecasis Rowing Club, leading the club through multiple key infrastructure upgrades.

Mike Bagshawe
Burnaby Rowing Club

Mike is a long-time RCA umpire, and was a rower and volunteer at Burnaby Lake Rowing Club for many years. He is the chair of the RCA Safety and Events Committee and has helped educate many umpires in his role as a Clinician.

Ray McKall
Victoria City Rowing Club

Ray’s involvement in rowing has spanned multiple provinces, and he has rowed and served as a board member at Winnipeg Rowing Club, Edmonton Rowing Club and Victoria City Rowing Club.

Victoria City Rowing Club
Keith has been a key member of Victoria City Rowing Club for 40 years, volunteering for regattas and boathouse maintenance as well as serving as a director.

The 2021 recipient of the Jack Nicholson Coaching Bursary is Janine Stephens (Winnipeg Rowing Club/Manitoba Rowing Association).

Jack Nicholson coached athletes at all levels of rowing, and was well known in Canadian rowing for his ongoing mentorship and support of club level coaches.

This coaching bursary was created by RCA and Jack’s family to acknowledge his immense contributions, and is awarded annually to coaches who best demonstrate Jack’s commitment, intuition and passion for coaching.

The 2021 RCA Excellence Awards will continue to be announced throughout the week of January 24-30.
