Canada’s rowing teams are set to take on the world at two significant events this summer: Henley Royal Regatta (HRR), and the 2024 World Rowing Senior, Under 23, and Under 19 Championships (Mega Worlds).  

Racing will kick off with Canada’s Under 23 (U23) Men’s Eight, U23 Women’s Eight, and U23 Women’s Four competing at Henley Royal Regatta (HRR), taking place from July 2 to 7 in Henley-on-Thames, UK. The prestigious Henley Royal Regatta attracts thousands of visitors each year, who are thrilled by over 300 races of an international standard, featuring both Olympic rowers and crews new to the event. 

Additionally, the Canadian Senior National Team will represent at HRR in a Women’s Quad, Four, Double, and Pair. National Training Centre Coach, Lauren Fisher, shares how this experience is a great benefit to the athletes for their long-term rowing goals. 

“Henley Royal Regatta is a unique opportunity for athletes to experience. The match racing style is incredibly intense, and the environment is entirely different to anything else in the world of rowing. The level of international competition will be fierce with crews at the top of their game and it’s a great challenge for Canadian crews using it as serious preparation on their path to the U23 World Championships and for the development of racing boats heading in to the LA Olympiad.” 

Later this summer, the combined event for the 2024 World Rowing Senior, U23 and U19 Championships, also known as Mega Worlds, will take place from August 18 to 25 in St. Catharines, ON. This marks the third time in history that St. Catharines will host the World Rowing Championships at the historic Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course. With thousands of spectators, competitors, and coaches converging on this iconic venue, the event promises to be a thrilling spectacle and a unique opportunity for Team Canada to compete on home soil. Chuck McDiarmid, RCA NextGen Lead, speaks to this special moment for Canadian rowers. 

“2024 is going to be a summer to remember,” said McDiarmid “It isn’t often that Canada has the honour of hosting a World Championships, allowing athletes the opportunity to race on home soil in front of their family and friends. I’m impressed by the number of athletes who have put their hand up and taken on the challenge of achieving the target speeds needed to be competitive at such an event.” 

Additional Junior and open weight U23 boats may still be nominated to compete at the World Championships in St. Catharines. Final selections will be made in mid-July following the completion of Regional Trials on July 13 and 14, 2024. “55 athletes have qualified for this year’s event, and we expect this number to grow after the Regional Trials in July” shares McDiarmid. “We have an incredible base of talent in Canada, and starting off the next quadrennial of development at home is something to celebrate.”
