Canada’s women’s eight was back on the international podium on Sunday in Lucerne, claiming the silver medal at World Cup 3.

The women’s eight crew featured three members of the Tokyo 2020 gold medal winning team, Sydney Payne, Avalon Wasteneys and Kristen Kit. This is the first senior international medal for Alexis Cronk, Cassidy Deane, Kirsten Edwards, and Morgan Rosts.

Following their sixth place finish in the women’s double sculls at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Gabrielle Smith and Jessica Sevick moved into the sweep program and the eight.

“It’s a different challenge trying to execute with nine people rather than two but it’s been super fun to learn from the other women and thrive off the different strengths in the boat,” said Smith. “The willingness within this crew to learn, be open-minded, and adapt together is our biggest strength.”

Three other crews also progressed to A finals. Trevor Jones finished fourth in the men’s single final, with the men’s eight and women’s pair crews coming in sixth.

“We are humble and hungry,” said 3-time Olympian Will Crothers, who raced in the men’s eight. “While we didn’t walk away with medals around our necks, we took steps forward and gained valuable experience. We will travel back to Canada with our heads held high, excited to build momentum towards the World Championships in September.”

The women’s pair consisted of two U23 athletes, Maya Meschkuleit and Leia Till, who will go on to represent Canada at the World U23 Championships in Italy later this month.

“Getting the invite to race at World Cup 3 itself was tremendously exciting but making the A Final at our first senior event was an absolute honour,” said Meschkuleit. “We were so excited to race alongside Olympic rowers and we can’t wait to see what we can accomplish at the U23 World Championships at the end of this month.”

Congratulations the entire team for representing Canada at World Cup 2 and 3. The Senior World Championship team will be announced at the end of August with the event taking place in Racice, Czech Republic from September 18-25.
