Welland Recreational Waterway Hosts a Showdown of Rowing Talent

This past weekend, the 2024 National Rowing Championships (NRCs) took place at the Welland Recreational Waterway, bringing together Canada’s rowers for three days of exciting competition. The athletes faced a mix of sun, rain, and wind, but they remained unfazed, displaying their skill and determination.

Racing kicked off on Friday October 11th with time trials that set the stage for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and repechages. Saturday saw intense quarterfinal and semifinal action, with Maya Meschkuleit, 2024 Olympic silver medalist, lending her voice as race commentator.

On Sunday October 13th, athletes battled it out in the A Finals to determine this year’s national champions. Morgan Rosts, winner of the Town Challenge Cup at the 2024 Henley Royal Regatta, and her father, Ted Rosts, commentated the racing, sharing valuable insights throughout the morning of competition.

The 2024 NRCs welcomed both seasoned athletes and rising stars, including Senior, Para, Under 23, and Under 19 rowers. One of the notable results came from the women’s pair, where Caileigh Filmer (Rowing BC) found herself back at the top of the podium this year for her 2nd consecutive NRCs gold medal win. Paired with Alexis Kronk (Row ON), the two raced with grace and grit to clinch the title of National Champions.

The Men’s Pair saw Steven Rosts (Row Ontario) and Axel Ewashko (Alberta Rowing) win gold, showcasing the depth of talent that continues to develop across Canadian rowing. Their chemistry and synchronization were apparent as they powered down the course with confidence and control.

Also among the notable achievements were Elizabeth Najjar (Don Rowing Club) in the women’s single, and Stephen Harris of Brock in the men’s single, both taking top honours and securing gold medals in their respective events.

The 2024 NRCs saw Alberta crowned the Provincial Grand Champions, with Ontario earning the Provincial Efficiency award as a result of their efforts across the championships.

Congratulations to all the athletes that competed at the 2024 NRCs. Regardless of the result, every athlete demonstrated the spirit of rowing—pushing themselves to new heights, striving for excellence, and showing remarkable resilience along the way.
