Rowing Canada Aviron and Rowing BC Statement

Rowing Canada Aviron and Rowing BC provide an update to the rowing community about a serious incident that occurred earlier this week.

Dear members of the rowing community,

We would like to provide an update on the serious incident that occurred on Quamichan Lake earlier this week. A masters rower from the Maple Bay Rowing Club went missing while rowing on the lake on Tuesday morning.

We have been closely monitoring the situation and offering our support to the Municipality, and to the Club, as they work tirelessly with the North Cowichan Fire Department, RCMP, and BCAS to search for the missing rower. The boat has since been recovered but despite their best efforts, the rower has unfortunately not yet been found. The search efforts are ongoing.

Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) has suspended programs on the lake, out of respect for the search efforts.

RCA and Rowing BC would like to express our deepest sympathies and support to the missing rower’s family, friends, and fellow rowers, as well as to the Maple Bay Rowing Club and the local community.

We recognize that this is a difficult time, and we will continue to offer our assistance in any way we can.
