World Rowing announced today their decision to cancel World Cup I (Sabaudia, Italy), World Cup II (Varese, Italy) and the Paralympic Qualification Regatta (Gavirate, Italy) due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) understands and supports this difficult decision issued by the FISA Executive Committee, the Italian Rowing Federation and respective organizing committees.
The RCA High Performance leadership team and coaching staff will be evaluating and adjusting plans to ensure our rowers are provided with the safest training and competition environment in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
RCA is aware of the community concern and disruptions related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. RCA is closely monitoring the situation and working with partners, World Rowing, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and Sport Canada, to ensure the health and safety of our rowing community is always the top priority.
We continue to work closely with RCA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mike Wilkinson to support our athletes and support staff in making critical health related decisions moving forward.
As of today, rowing events held within Canada are not impacted by this situation however we will continue to monitor this fast-evolving global situation and provide updates to the rowing community as necessary.
