The 1984 Canadian men’s coxed eight won gold at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, warding off the home crowd favourites, the United States. This gold medal was the first gold medal won by a Canadian men’s eight at an Olympic Games or World Championships.
The race was expected to be a showdown among the strong crews from Australia, New Zealand and the United States, with Canada regarded as the underdogs. Instead, Canada led from start to finish, holding off the Americans in the final metres by 42-hundredths of a second.
