David Christopher Leach 1942-2025

David Christopher “Chris” Leach (1942–2025)

Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) is saddened to share the passing of David Christopher “Chris” Leach, who passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 83.

A two-time Olympian, Chris represented Canada in the men’s coxless four at both the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games. His passion for rowing extended far beyond competition – he was a dedicated coach and builder of the sport in Canada.

After his Olympic career, Chris attended Trent University alongside his friend Lach MacLean. Together, they founded the Trent University Rowing Club in 1970. Just a year later, with the support of Trent University biology professor David Carlisle, Chris helped establish the first Head of the Trent Regatta, which has since grown into a celebrated tradition in the Canadian rowing calendar.

Chris also served as head coach of both the Trent University Rowing Club and the Peterborough Rowing Club, leaving a lasting legacy through the generations of rowers he coached and inspired.

RCA extends its condolences to Chris’s family, friends, and the entire rowing community in Peterborough and beyond. His contributions to our sport will not be forgotten.
