Canada’s Para PR3 Mix4+ and Men’s Four Crews Battle on Day 4 in Shanghai

- Sep 24, 2025
Wednesday, September 24th, 2025 – Shanghai, China
Hitting the midway point of the week, the Para PR3 Mix4+ crew took to the start line to open the fourth day of racing at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China.
Jay Berner, Stu Chase, Abbygayle Durliat, Danielle Main, and Teija Patry represented Canada together internationally for the first time. Following their performance at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August, the crew was eager to test themselves on the world stage.
In their heat, Canada faced crews from China, the USA, and Brazil. Unfortunately, due to an equipment issue late in the race , the crew was unable to get back into contention for the A Final.
“Abby, our smallest crew member, worked her butt off to get us across the line as the only starboard power remaining,” reflected Stu Chase. “Teija also called a great race to figure out the prosthetic situation as fast as we could. What a crew and a fight to the finish.”
They will be back on the water again on September 26th at 10:15 PM PT, 1:15 AM EST, and September 27th at 1:15 PM local time for the Final B in the PR3Mix4+ against Spain.
Then, after racing was postponed until the afternoon, the Men’s Four (M4–) featuring Axel Ewashko, Ryan Clegg, Steven Rosts, and Joel Cullen lined up against China, Spain, Denmark, Germany, and Czechia.
At the start, the race was tightly contested, with every crew pushing hard in their final opportunity in the Men’s Four. By the 1000-meter mark, Canada held fourth position behind Denmark, Germany, and Spain.
In the closing stages, Czechia surged through the field to take the lead, followed by Denmark, Germany, and Spain. Canada crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 06:13.20.
The results reflected the intensity of the field and gave the young Canadian crew a valuable opportunity to build toward future international competition and their long-term goals in this quadrennial.
