Sunday July 11, 2021 – Račice, Czech Republic
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Canada’s men’s four claimed a gold medal in Račice, Czech Republic on the final day of racing at the World Rowing U23 Championships.
Liam Keane (Victoria City Rowing Club/Dartmouth College), Adam Krol (Argonaut Rowing Club/University of Washington), Peter Lancashire (Brentwood College/University of Washington) and Jack Walkey (Claremont Sports Institute Rowing Academy/University of Washington) led the way in the men’s four throughout the event, finishing first in their heat and in their A/B semifinal to progress to the A final. The crew finished just ahead of silver medallists Ireland in the A final with a time of 5:56.68.
“As a crew, it’s really special, and reaching this destination and putting an exclamation mark on it just makes it that much more special,” said Lancashire. “[The last year] was challenging with COVID, but being flexible and being able to row and train in [an RCA NextGen bubble in] Washington just shows that if you have the right environment, coach and support, you can be successful.”
Canada’s women’s pair of Alexis Cronk (University of Victoria Rowing Club) and Kirsten Edwards (University of Victoria Rowing Club) also progressed to an A final. It was a tight race, with Canada finishing in fourth less than three seconds behind third place Germany.
