2020 Canadian indoor rowing season

2020 Canadian indoor rowing season

The 2020 Canadian competitive indoor rowing season is in full swing, with successful events already hosted by Leander Boat Club in Hamilton, Ontario and Brentwood College in Mill Bay, BC this month. Participants from across the country are gearing up for many more upcoming indoor rowing events beginning Saturday February 1.

Indoor rowing is offered at local rowing clubs, community centres and indoor rowing studios, and while individuals use rowing machines year-round, during the winter months Canada is host to multiple competitive indoor rowing events.

Indoor rowing recently came into the international spotlight when Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques took to his redesigned ergometer for a training session in the International Space Station.

“The indoor rowing community has seen immense growth, and includes not just flat-water rowers in training, but also individuals from many other fitness programs and sports,” said Jennifer Fitzpatrick, RCA Director of Partnerships and Sport Development. “Indoor rowing allows for great participation opportunities and RCA is excited to continue to promote this discipline to individuals across Canada.”

This season, RCA is piloting a nationwide Indoor Rowing Championship program that will see overall results from sanctioned events across the country tabulated to crown the 2020 National record holders in various age categories. Stay tuned for further details and information on how you can get involved.

“The rowing community in Hamilton is very excited about the new RCA initiatives for indoor rowing,” said Leander Boat Club Rowing Captain, Greg Hanta.  “Every event is also welcoming new rowers to indoor rowing, so you don’t need to have any on-water rowing experience – or need to be an expert CrossFit gym athlete. Events are also making it incredibly easy to even register on the day and give it a try.”
