Monitoring Strategy

Rowing Canada Aviron has restructured its athlete monitoring program to establish a National Testing and Monitoring Strategy for all athletes within RCA’s High Performance Pathway. This program has been developed in conjunction with RCA’s Senior National Team coaching staff to ensure engagement and opportunity for athletes to assess and monitor their training progress on a national level.

Tests and Assessments: The following series of tests and assessments will be used as part of the Testing and Monitoring Strategy.

  1. Water based Assessment – Competitions open to all athletes within Canada, allowing individuals to demonstrate their ability to perform in small boats.
  • National Rowing Championships (NRC)
  • Speed Orders National Selection Regatta
  1. RADAR testing – Battery of Ergometer tests submitted twice a year. See Appendix (A) for additional information on RADAR testing and submission dates.
  2. Individual 2k Submissions – In addition to the RADAR tests, two 2k ergometer submissions are included in the Testing and Monitoring Strategy.
  3. Monitoring Camps – As part of RCA’s Next Gen Strategy, In-depth monitoring camps will be offered to provide feedback to athletes and coaches regarding their ongoing development.  See appendix (C) for information regarding camps dates and eligibility (TBD).

Dates: Each Testing and Monitoring event is aligned to RCA’s performance requirements, such as selection and funding opportunities. Testing ranges are provided in order to allow for assessments to fit within training blocks.

How to submit: Athletes are responsible to ensure their results are entered into the Athlete Monitoring DataBase,

Specifics on how to enter each test or assessment can be found in Appendix (B).

How results will be used:

  • Sport Canada Athlete Assistance Program (CARDING): Submissions are aligned with RCA’s posted AAP requirements, ensuring results from athletes engaged in the monitoring program can be used as part of the “Eligibility” requirements and ranking process. See RCA’s Athlete Assistance Program document for specific requirements.
  • Invitation to RCA Camps and Centres: Submission and engagement in the process allows RCA to rank athletes who are seeking selection to RCA’s National Team Programs. Based on these rankings athletes may be invited to Camps or Centres for further assessments. This could include;
    • Integration Camps
    • Training Camps
    • Selection Camps
    • Other training opportunities.
  • Athlete development: Routine dialog will be held between RCA’s Development Program staff, the athlete, and his or her coach on the results of their testing and what is required and expected to progress in the development system. This will ensure all parties are in agreement on how the athlete is progressing as well as establishing potential short term and long-term benchmarks.
  • Competitive readiness and development progress: The Testing and Monitoring Strategy will provide Feedback to RCA regarding its current athlete pool including stage of development on the athlete pathway.
