University athletes from across the country travelled to Elk Lake, on Vancouver Island this past weekend for the Canadian University Rowing Championships.
A mix of sun and rain greeted the athletes during the regatta as rowers raced down the course while representing their universities.
“This has been yet another great Championships with coast to coast representation from many of Canada’s top universities,” said Peter Somerwil, President of the Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA).
Somerwil added that the regatta is increasing in size every year and becoming increasingly competitive as the sport continues to grow in Canadian universities.
University rowing programs provide an important pathway for many athletes to transition to the national team. In 2014, a number of the national team programs had a majority of athletes coming from the university system.
At this year's regatta, Western University in Ontario won the overall women’s trophy while the University of British Columbia narrowly beat their rivals, the University of Victoria, to take the men’s title.
Next year, the 2015 Canadian University Rowing Championships have been awarded to St. Francis Xavier University and will take place on Lochaber Lake in beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
