Sunday, May 7, 2017 – Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) congratulates North Bay Rowing Club (North Bay, ON), Club d'aviron de Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, QC), Club d’aviron de Montréal (Montreal, QC), Rowing PEI, Kennebecasis Rowing Club (Rothesay, NB) and Fredericton Rowing Club (Fredericton, NB) as the recipients of the RCA Recreational Fleet Program.
“The Recreational Fleet Program has provided incredible opportunities for Provincial Rowing Associations and member clubs to increase participation over the last nine years,” said Colleen Miller, coach education and development manager, RCA. “This program has shared needed boats and trailers across Canada, encouraging clubs to establish new programs and create unique opportunities for both new and experienced rowers.”
The Recreational Fleet Program was first made available to provincial and local rowing organizations in 2008 and since then, the program has made its way to almost every province in Canada.
"Rowing PEI is excited to receive the loan of these boats and other equipment because we are a small, relatively new association and every boat means more rowers on the water," said Daphne Dumont, president, Rowing PEI.
"While we are proud of P.E.I.'s growing reputation as a coastal rowing hot spot, the recreational fleet allows us to showcase other kinds of rowing," said Dumont, who added the club also hopes to take all of the boats to other locations across the Island.
Rowing PEI had the entire recreational fleet from 2010 until 2012 and that was the starting point for the current club, which has about 50 members, based in Charlottetown. Dumont took the opportunity to issue an invitation to all RCA members.
"If rowers are visiting Prince Edward Island this summer, we invite them to visit us at the Charlottetown Yacht Club and find out what we have to offer, including going out in one of our coastal sculls."
