Canadian U23 crews take the stage for World Rowing Championships

HomeNews EventsNews

Tuesday, July 24, 2018 – Eight Canadian crews are set for racing this week on the world-renowned Malta regatta course in Poznan, Poland. The World Rowing Under 23 Championships is open to all World Rowing Federation (FISA) member nations for rowers under the age of 23. The under-23s began in 1976 as the ‘Seniors Match’ and then the name was changed to the ‘Nations Cup’ before becoming the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in 2005.

The Canadian roster includes talent coming straight from the podium at World Cup 3 Lucerne. Avalon Wasteneys and Sydney Payne won the silver medal with the Canadian senior women’s eight in Lucerne in early July. The duo will look to carry this experience forward for more big boat action this week aiming to defend their gold medal from the 2017 U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

2017 U23 World Champion Trevor Jones will be the first Canadian to line up in the men’s single sculls on Wednesday morning at 10:20 a.m. ET / 7:20 a.m. PT. The Canadian women’s pair, men’s coxless four and the women’s quadruple scull crews will round out the heats for the day.

A packed schedule of racing follows on Thursday with the remaining Canadian crews set to hit the water including the women’s eight, men’s eight, men’s quadruple sculls, and the lightweight men’s double, all looking to heat things up in Poznan.

It’s not too late to support the Under-23 team! RCA launched the #RCANextGen campaign, supporting the Under-23 team as they prepare for and compete at the 2018 World Rowing Championships. The goal of this campaign is to raise funds that will go directly to reducing any fees that athletes face when representing Canada.

To show your support of the athletes and the campaign via social media, post #RCANextGen on your Facebook or Twitter. RCA would like to thank all those who have contributed already to the campaign in support of the next generation of Canadian rowers!
