Awards & Recognition

The RCA National Awards Banquet is an annual event where members have an opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions of our Rowers, Coaches, Volunteers and Umpires.  Many of these awards are based on results at regattas; others are selected based on nominations received by the Awards Committee from our Members.

2016 ANNUAL AWARDS

RCA celebrated the 36th Annual National Awards Banquet at the close of the RCA National Conference, jointly hosted with the World Rowing Coaches Conference. The evening also recognized Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic medallists from the lightweight women’s double sculls and the LTA Mixed4+.

Lindsay Jennerich and Victoria Nolan, medallists from the Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively, won top honours with the Senior Athlete and Para Athlete of the Year Awards. Nicole Hare, Under-23 World Champion in the women’s pair and Olympian, was recognized as top under-23 athlete and Emma Gray as Junior Athlete of the Year.

The 36th Annual Awards Banquet also recognized the work of the Canadian rowing community. Michael Simonson repeated as Coach of the Year, after another positive season at the Calgary Rowing Club. Along with on-water achievements, Simonson was recognized for his constructive and proactive approach in the boathouse. Following a successful job hosting the Canadian Masters Regatta, Regina Rowing Club was recognized with the Club Achievement of the Year, presented by Pearson Dunn.

The RCA Awards were jointly held with the World Rowing Award Gala where the international rowing community was celebrated in a busy Olympic and Paralympic year. For a list of winners, please see

Call For Nominations - 2016 RCA National Awards Program

Dear RCA Members,

The RCA Annual Awards Banquet is an event where members have an opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions of our Volunteers, Clubs and Coaches. Many of these awards are selected based on nominations received by the Awards Committee from our Members.

If you have a volunteer, coach or club that deserves special recognition for their performance or contributions to our sport, this is your opportunity to put their name forward.

This year, Rowing Canada Aviron invites you to submit nominations for the following RCA Awards:

​Award winners are recognized on the RCA website and at the National Awards Banquet that takes place during the RCA National Conference, January 28th, 2016 at the Pinnacel Harbourfront Hotel in Vancouver, BC. This is a great opportunity to recognize an exceptional volunteer, coach or club. Club - "Outstanding Achievement of the Year"

Presented by Pearson Dunn Insurance Inc.

The RCA Club - "Outstanding Achievement of the Year" Award is presented to a Rowing Canada Aviron Club that has undertaken a new project or initiative that demonstrates outstanding leadership, innovation or success and has had a significant impact at the Club, sport or community level.

Coach of the Year

The RCA Coach of the Year Award recognizes a Club Coach who has produced outstanding crews or individual athletes in competitive activities at the provincial and national level in the immediate past season/year.  To be considered, the Coach must also be someone who demonstrates a personal  commitment to coaching excellence and has been continuously involved in RCA's national coaching education program; demonstrates the values of fair play, good sportsmanship and respect for officials; promotes the development of athletes' abilities both on and off the water and, has the respect of his or her peers.

The Coach of the Year Award winner and the “runner up” will be featured on the RCA website.  The winner of the “Coach of the Year” Award will be recognized at the National Awards Dinner and receive a free registration to the National Coaching Conference.

Lifetime Achievement Award

A Lifetime Achievement Award shall be awarded to recognize a longstanding, significant and exemplary contribution (minimum ten years) to the sport of rowing within Canada. Any member may nominate an individual for this Award however; this Award is given at the discretion of the RCA Board of Directors and may or may not be awarded annually.  A recipient may only receive this award once.

RCA Lifetime Achievement Award winners will be profiled on the RCA Website and in the National Awards banquet program; receive an invitation and complementary ticket to the RCA National Awards Banquet as well as one nights accommodation.

Long Service Awards

Rowing Canada Aviron values the contributions of our rowing volunteers at all levels (Club, Regattas, PRA's and RCA). Any RCA participant or organization who has served as a rowing volunteer, in any capacity for 15 years or greater is entitled to receive a Long Service Award from Rowing Canada Aviron. Both individual persons and organizations are eligible for this award.

RCA Long Service Awards are given in 5 year increments beginning at 15 years (ie, 15 years, 20 years, 25 years, 30 years, 35 years, 40 years, 45 years and 50 years – longer if applicable). 

Years of service is determined on the basis of participation as:  a member of an RCA Club, Special Association or Provincial Rowing Association; a volunteer worker or administrator at the club, provincial or national levels; a volunteer coach at the club, provincial or national levels and as an official at the club, provincial or national levels.  Quality of service shall not form a consideration; however, mere payment of membership or other fees and/or attendance at events as a spectator only, shall not be considered as qualifying service.

The Long Service Award recipient shall receive a distinctive lapel pin in the case of an individual, or a framed or mounted certificate in the case of an organization.

Recipients of the RCA Long Service Awards will be recognized on the RCA Website.  Recipients of RCA Long Service Awards (30 years or greater) will receive an invitation and complimentary ticket to the RCA National Awards banquet and be recognized in the National Banquet Awards program.

Ensure your Club, Regatta, and provincial volunteers are recognized for their long term commitment to our sport.

Volunteer of the Year

The RCA Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has, in a manner consistent with RCA’s values of excellence, integrity and community made an exemplary contribution to the sport in the areas of leadership, development and growth.

Distinct from Long Service or Lifetime Achievement Awards, this award is intended to recognize a volunteer member of a Club or Special Association who has, through a particular piece of work or initiative made a significant contribution that has had a strong and positive impact on the rowing community, particularly in the immediate past season/year. 

To be eligible a Volunteer must be a member of an RCA Club or Special Association and registered with RCA.  The nominee will have volunteered consistently for the sport for a period of not less than 5 years.

The “Volunteer of the Year” Award winner and the “runner up” will be featured on the RCA website.  The winner of the “Volunteer of the Year” Award will be recognized at the National Awards Dinner and receive a free nights accommodation.

Tony Zasada Memorial Fund Award

We are pleased to attach the application forms for this year’s Tony Zasada Memorial Fund Award.

This $2000 award is provided annually to an athlete who best emulates Tony’s character and determination.

The Jack Nicholson Coaching Bursary

The Jack Nicholson Coaching Bursary has been created by Rowing Canada Aviron and Jack’s family to acknowledge Jack’s immense contributions. This year $1,000 will be presented to the recipient(s) who best demonstrate(s) Jack’s commitment, intuition and passion for coaching. Candidates should be seeking funding support to pursue their own goals related to improving their coaching skills through coaching certification, conference participation and mentoring or apprentice opportunities.

Umpire of the Year Award

This Award recognizes the contribution of an Umpire who has made a significant and exemplary contribution to rowing racing in Canada, particularly in the immediate past season/year.  To be eligible an Umpire must have been licensed for a minimum of three years, and there is no limit to the number of times an Umpire may be nominated for this award.

Nominations for this award will be received from Provincial Rowing Associations (maximum of one per province).  The Umpire of the Year Award final nominees will be reviewed by the RCA Umpires Committee which will make its recommendation for the Umpire of the Year Award and “runner up”to the RCA's Awards Committee.


An assessment of possible winners of all awards is made annually but an award is not necessarily made every year.
